  • January 19, 2014

Fencers from the Great Lakes Fencing Academy, and members of the LHS-VHHS Fencing Team, dominated the Illinois Junior Varsity State Fencing Championships this weekend in Woodstock, IL taking home two Gold Medals and a Bronze Medal in three different events.

The newly formed LHS-VHHS fencing team joined the Great Lakes High School Fencing Conference in October 2013 and in its first season beat long established fencing teams, like Stevenson and New Trier.

Katherine Liu, a sophomore at LHS, beat 36 competitors to tie for third place in the women’s saber event and earn the Bronze Medal.

Ethan Stein, a senior at VHHS, won the Gold Medal in the men’s epee event besting 43 other fencers.

Brian Lemay, a freshman at LHS, took home the Gold Medal in the men’s saber event, beating 43 fencers to win the top slot.

Buoyed by Lemay’s winning Gold, the men’s sabre won 1st place to become the Illinois Junior Varsity State Saber Champions.

In addition, Stein’s winning the Gold Medal, combined with strong performances by Gordon Schlicht, Andrew Bringle and Tore Posterli earned the men’s epee team third place and the Bronze Medal in the men’s epee event.

This is the team’s first season so we are very proud of each of our fencers’ individual achievements and the team’s overall accomplishments.

Great job everyone! We’re looking forward to another strong showing at our final tournament of the season at the University of Chicago Lab School on January 25th.
